Hello Honey, I’m home!

Two weeks ago, I collected my first hive. This is my first foray into the world of beekeeping.

A swarm is a large mass of bees, about a hundred million to my eyes, which has set off on it’s own, to find a new hive.

I climbed up a tree, and shook the swarm down into a box. Sounds simple really. There I was, in overalls, veil, boots, gloves etc, puffing away while my 85 yr old Dad is using only a long sleeve shirt as his only protection. He is amazing.

We used a dustpan and brush to shovel up a pile which missed the box, and poured them in. They behave like some very weird non-Newtonian fluid.

They were then allowed to gather themselves together, and then poured them into a beehive box. A few days later, they were delivered to my place by trusty Dad. My girls have arrived, and are sited down the garden between a Granny Smith and an olive tree.
