Another Hive!

The Plan…
Dad’s hive was inspected yesterday, and the reason behind the swarm was elucidated – there was an ample supply of queen cells. We decided to set up new hive, using some brood frames from Dad’s very strong hive, and include a queen cell. The queen in new hive number one was ‘replaced’ with a queen cell, and I was to bring an empty box and such for hive two. Unfortunately, queen number two had other ideas.

What really happened…
Well, the queen cell in Dad’s hive hatched a day early, and so off went another swarm! Up and over the fence it went, over to Gwen’s place, where all the other swarms had gone. Thankfully, it chose to land in a low apple tree rather than the usual one. So, after work I went after swarm number two. I am still so amazed at how docile swarming bees are, none felt the urge to hassle or sting me.

I placed an empty hive box on a wheely bin, and Dad lined it up under the swarm, which hung in the tree like a buzzy icicle. There was a significant entourage of spectators, with a great mix of fear and curiosity. Several thumps on tree with a sledge hammer resulted in the beecicle dropping into the box, just as intended. It is both nice and rare for things to happen so well. I brushed the remainder of the swarm down using a broom, popped the lid on, and waited. The vast cloud of displaced apies settled very quickly into their new home. I am very happy.
